The singer became emotional before performing Parton’s hit song ‘Jolene’, reflecting on their close bond and expressing how much she missed the late music icon.
Speaking to the audience while seated at the edge of the stage, Cyrus described their relationship as eternal, insisting that nothing could separate them.
“Me and Dolly, we are eternal. Nothing in this life could ever tear us apart,” she said.
Cyrus became tearful as she spoke about Parton’s absence, adding that she looked forward to seeing her again.
“And I’m gonna see her again. And I can’t f------ wait. And I miss her,” she said.
The tribute marked a significant moment for Cyrus, who explained that she had seen Parton perform live only once, and it was at the Hollywood Bowl.
Introducing ‘Jolene’, she praised her godmother’s contribution to music, noting that some of the greatest songs in the industry were written, produced and performed by Parton.
Parton played a significant role in Cyrus’ life from childhood. The country music legend was named her godmother in 1992 and had previously toured with Cyrus’ father, country singer Billy Ray Cyrus.
In a recent interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Cyrus also reflected on the guidance she received from Parton, describing her as someone who always seemed to know the right thing to do.
Cyrus’ performance was part of her return to the stage for her first solo show since 2022. She was scheduled to perform a second sold-out show at the Hollywood Bowl on October 18.
